BANNED Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 18, 2025

Banned is a social app for sharing short-form videos and interacting with others' content by "loving" or "banning" it. Because we care deeply about safety and user privacy, we try to limit the data we collect to what is necessary to provide the Services and help you connect with friends. This policy outlines what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Data Collection and Use

1.1 Account Data

When you sign up for Banned, you provide a phone number or email address, along with optional profile data such as name, username, and profile photo. We use this information to identify you to other Banned users and to ensure your account is unique.

1.2 Contacts Data

With your permission, we may access your address book so you can discover which of your contacts are on Banned and optionally invite others to join. We do not send messages to your contacts on your behalf unless you explicitly choose to do so. You always control what invitations get sent.

1.3 Video and Interaction Data

When you post or watch videos on Banned, we collect details about those interactions (e.g., video views, love/ban actions, watch duration). We use this information to provide and improve our Services, personalize content, and maintain a safe environment.

1.4 Location Data

If you allow it, we may collect approximate location data (e.g., city-level) when you interact with the app. We do not continuously track precise location, and we do not share your exact location publicly.

1.5 Device and App Activity Data

We automatically collect information about your device (e.g., device type, operating system, IP address, unique identifiers) and how you interact with Banned (e.g., screens visited, length of sessions). We use this data to improve the app, develop new features, and maintain security.

2. How We Disclose Data

We do not sell, rent, license, or lease your data to third parties, nor do we share it with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising. However, we may disclose data in the following ways:

  • Service Providers: Hosting, customer support, analytics, or other services that assist us in running Banned.
  • Professional Advisors: Lawyers, accountants, and other advisors who help us comply with the law and manage risk.
  • Business Transaction Recipients: Counterparties and others assisting with mergers, acquisitions, financings, reorganizations, bankruptcies, and asset or stock sales involving our company.
  • Legal and Safety: Government authorities or regulators if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of Banned, our users, or others.

3. How You Share Data

When you post or interact with videos, your actions are visible to other users (e.g. they can see when you "love" or "ban" a video). When watching a video, your username (or approximate location, if location sharing is enabled) may be logged and made available to the video creator. If you take a screenshot or video recording of someone else's content, Banned may notify the content owner (if such a feature is enabled).

4. Data Retention

We generally retain your data only as long as needed to provide the Services or as required by law. When data is no longer necessary, we securely delete or anonymize it.

5. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights:

  • Deactivate: You can deactivate your account.
  • Know/Access: Request the categories of data we have collected about you, and ask to access or download that data.
  • Delete: Request deletion of your data, subject to legal or operational limitations.
  • Correct: Ask us to correct inaccuracies in your data.
  • Stop Processing: Withdraw or limit our ability to process your data.
  • Object: Object to how we process your data.
  • Complain: Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority, if applicable.

To exercise these rights, please tap "Get Help" in the app or email us at contact@oedipa.co. Include information (e.g., username, phone number) to verify your identity. An authorized agent may also make requests on your behalf, though we may require you to verify authorization.

6. Do Not Track

Your browser or device settings may allow you to send "do not track" signals. Our website and app do not currently respond to such signals, nor do we use or disclose your data in any way that would require recognizing them.

7. Children

Banned is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have collected data from a child under 13, or if you are a parent or guardian of a user under 13 who has provided data, please contact us at contact@oedipa.co so we can delete it.

8. California Residents

If you are a California resident, the following additional disclosures apply:

  • Categories of Personal Information Collected: Identifiers (such as name, IP address), contact details, approximate location, and device information.
  • Sources: We collect personal information from you directly, automatically from your device, and from service providers who help us operate Banned.
  • Purposes: For providing, personalizing, and improving the app, security, compliance with laws, and operational needs.
  • Recipients: We share personal information with service providers, professional advisors, or for legal and safety requirements.
  • Retention: The retention period depends on factors including whether it's still necessary to provide the Services, or to comply with legal obligations.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to account for changes in our services or laws. If we make material changes, we will notify you (e.g., through the app) before they take effect. The revised policy will be posted here with an updated date.
